About the Monte Vista Crane Festival
Each February, Sandhill Cranes begin their annual migration back north from their wintering grounds on and around Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. They congregate in large numbers on the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge for water, food, and roosting.
The Monte Vista Crane Festival is organized annually over the second weekend in March to celebrate the return of these magnificent birds to the Valley of the Cranes. The festival was first held in 1984, which was a small event that attracted mostly locals. Over the years, the festival has grown into a popular three-day event that attracts crane watchers from far and wide to join the celebration.
The Crane Festival features art exhibits, craft vendors, evening & morning crane tours, keynote speakers, breakfasts, and more. In 2025, the three-day Monte Vista Crane Festival will begin on Friday, March 7 and conclude on Sunday, March 9.
